About Our Chairs
The many styles of Windsor chair reproductions
shown in this web site are copies of antique Windsor Chairs we have
restored over the years. The construction and materials used in our
chairs are the same as used in the original antiques.
Windsor chairs are well known for their comfort, beauty and
durability. The design and method of construction result in their
inherent strength, providing generations of use.
The seat, made of two inch native New Hampshire white pine,
is carved and sanded by hand to a comfortable and beautifully
proportioned shape. The legs, bows and arm posts are drilled through the
seat and are then glued and wedged, giving them continual tightness. Bow
and spindles are of oak or ash; legs and stretchers are of maple or
birch and are carefully cut (turned) by hand on the lathes in our shop.
In fact, all our chair parts are made right here in our shop.
We finish our chairs in a variety of ways. The finish
referred to in the price is for a wood stain, clear finish. At
additional cost we offer a variety of antique
finishes for those who wish their chairs to have a natural aged
antique look.. These procedures include one or more contrasting coats of
milk paint over water stain with authentic subtle pin striping covered
by an antique glaze, light distressing of typical worn areas, leaving
spindle and leg ends slightly raised, to complete the antique look.
Antique crackle finish in a variety of top coats over undercoat colors
is also very attractive, as well as painted chairs with stained seats,
with the above antique finishing procedures. A variety of stain and
paint colors are available.
The quality of our chairs is among the best. One of the main
reasons for this assurance is that they are not mass produced, but each
is carefully handmade. Many customers desire chairs that were perhaps
designed and made for them individually, and may also appreciate meeting
and talking with the craftsman responsible for their personal order.
STRAW HILL CHAIRS is a family run business since 1984, employing only
family members.
We have strived to keep our prices
affordable. For example: a set of chairs (2 arm chairs and 4 side
chairs) can be purchased for around $3,000. All chairs are branded,
dated and numbered.
We are state juried members of the League of New
Hampshire Craftsmen, Concord, New Hampshire, and the New
Hampshire Furniture Masters Association. |
